A tree that witnessed centuries

On the estate of Château St. Gerlach once stood a monumental oak, believed to have been planted around 1759 when the farmhouse on Landgoed Corneli was built. For more than two and a half centuries it shaped the landscape and became part of this place.

Two years ago, the tree had to be removed after its condition deteriorated. Rather than letting its story end there, part of the tree has been transformed into a handcrafted bench, placed near the spot where the oak once stood.

Earlier this week, Camille Oostwegel Sr., Matti Laeven and Ron Pluijmaekers (Director of Bomendienst Limburg) took the first seat on the bench together, honouring a friendship and collaboration rooted in this land and the memories it holds.

In this way, history remains tangible. A place to sit, remember and reflect on the very ground where the oak stood for centuries. Where the old oak once rooted the landscape, a young honey tree has now been planted. A new chapter growing beside the bench, symbolising renewal and the future of this remarkable estate.
